A 12-year-old Lebanese boy, Zain, is suing his parents for bringing him into this world. The childhood of Zain and his siblings in the slums of Beirut has been cut short. When his sister experiences a harsh fate as a result of child marriage, Zain has had enough and runs away from home. The kind cleaner Rahil offers her a home and Zain helps by looking after her young son Yona. But when Rahil unexpectedly disappears, Zain must muster all his strength, courage and ingenuity to take care of himself and Yonas. The director Nadine Labaki filmed the film Kapernaum (Capharnaüm) on the streets of Beirut in authentic locations and uses only amateur actors in the film. Zain al Rafeea, who plays the main role, is a Syrian refugee and uses his real name in the film. For the film, Labaki did background work with refugee children and got the idea for the trial seen in the film: the children often wonder why they exist if they cannot be taken care of. Capernaum - Children of Chaos is a rousing cry for the rights of the most vulnerable children.
