Badding

A fairytale-like depiction of the shy hero of Finnish rock, Rauli ‘Badding’ Somerjoki, portrays the whirlwind of a sensitive country boy amidst the harsh touring life. According to the director’s own words, the movie ‘is neither true nor false,’ but rather a fantasy that allows for various interpretations. Based on flashback sequences, the narrative begins with moments preceding the aging rock star’s comeback concert. The stage-frightened Badding-Rauli hits the road, fleeing. An old friend, Ossi, becomes Rauli’s chauffeur, although his motives are not entirely sincere. The road to Somero is burdened with memories, but the most crucial element, friendship, is discovered after all.

The film splendidly earned four different Jussi Awards: Best Film, Best Actor (Janne Reinikainen), Best Cinematography (Kari Sohlberg), Best Production Design (Minna Santakari), and Best Costume Design (Tiina Kaukanen).

The Last Wedding

The Last Wedding (orig. Kivenpyörittäjän kylä) is based on Heikki Turunen’s book of the same original name and depicts the final moments of Jerusalem, a village left behind by structural changes, encapsulating the beauty and misery of human life. Pekka returns after a long time to his hometown, the small village of Jerusalem, to celebrate the village’s last wedding. His own marriage seems to have reached a dead end. The village gathers to prepare for this final event, and within a single summer day, the bitter-sweet spectrum of human existence with its joys and sorrows seems to converge.

The film won three Jussi Awards: Best Film, Best Supporting Actor (Matti Varjo), and Best Direction (Markku Pölönen).

Tár

In the film “Tár,” written, produced, and directed by Todd Field, Cate Blanchett portrays the role of Lydia Tár, a prominent German symphony orchestra’s innovative conductor. Tár has reached the pinnacle of her career and is preparing to release a book along with the long-awaited live performance of Mahler’s 5th Symphony. However, over the course of a few weeks, amidst these significant events, her life starts going downhill in a highly modern way. The movie delves into the exploration of power, its impacts, and its permanence in contemporary society.

Hyväveli

The law enforcement officer Loyan, played by Abdirahman Bile, tries to adapt to the new police department while keeping his recently released friend Warsame (Kamaludin Ahmed Abdulla) on the right track. Loyan has an ambitious goal to get into detective training, but his superior Jokisalo (Sampo Sarkola) thinks that he is better off patrolling familiar neighborhoods with his partner Johanna (Heli Sutela).

Patrol duties turn into real action when they begin to investigate a case that appears to be a suicide. Professional criminal and racist Antero Päiviö (Riku Kemppinen), who is involved in the drug trade, jumps from his balcony. A man who was initially declared dead suddenly comes back to life and is taken to the hospital. Loyan finds it hard to believe the man’s story and decides to find out the truth at any cost. As events begin to unravel, it’s hard to know who to trust anymore, especially when Warsame seems to be scheming behind Loyan’s back.

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) is a good-hearted man who observes the world in his peculiar way. At the beginning of the film, he tells the vent guest his life story, because he wants to and doesn’t see anything strange about it.

Through chance, Forrest becomes involved in significant events in world history, such as the Vietnam War, Elvis, John Lennon, and President Nixon. Forrest’s differency is by no means an insurmountable obstacle. He owns a successful seafood company, is a war hero, and has visited the White House several times. Forrest is an affectionate individual; you could say that he just wants to bring as much good as possible into the world. But can he get the love of his life?

The film won a whopping six Oscars: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Special Effects.

Sieniretki tells the story of PJ, a screenwriter facing challenges in his career, and his best friend Jam, who is a car dealer. Both are tired of their everyday life and together they decide to rent a cabin in the Finnish archipelago. They have a bag of mushrooms with them so that they would certainly experience new interesting experiences.

However, the weekend-long vacation gets out of hand when they experience all kinds of challenges on their trip.

In the story of the film, the lives of three people meet by chance due to common factors. Francis works in Finland without a work and residence permit, while Jere illegally brings growth hormones into Finland. The third participant is Vera and Aleksi, an ex-married couple suffering from relationship problems.

The film was nominated for four Jussi awards: best cinematography, sound design, editing, and costume design.

Koulukino’s learning material is aimed at high schools and vocational schools. The assignments deal with e.g. film locations, film script, information about the plot offered to the viewer, choices of characters, and immigration policy.

Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris

Widowed Ada Harris lives in London in the 1950s, working as a cleaner. One day she falls in love with a Dior dress presented by her client. As a sign from her late husband, Ada receives a large sum of money for the loss of her husband Eddie in the war, as she should have received a war widow’s pension as a result of what happened.

Mrs. Harris makes a different decision compared to his previous lifestyle and makes it her goal to own a Dior dress and leaves for Paris. The film is the story of a brave woman who pursues her unique dream regardless of other people’s opinions. The film is based on Paul Galliconi’s novel Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Paris, which appeared in 1957.

The film was nominated for best costume design at the Oscars.
